When sprinklers run weak — short throw, heads that barely pop up, or misting instead of throwing — most homeowners assume the heads are broken. But low pressure is almost always caused by something upstream of the heads: a valve, a filter, a pipe, or the supply itself. Here's a systematic way to figure out which one.
First: Is the Low Pressure in One Zone or All Zones?
This is the most important diagnostic question. Run each zone one at a time and observe whether low pressure is consistent across the system or isolated to one zone. If all zones are weak, the problem is before the zone valves. If one zone is weak and others are fine, the problem is in or after that zone's valve.
Low Pressure in All Zones — What to Check
- Shut-off valve at the meter or backflow preventer: Ensure it's fully open. A partially closed gate valve reduces pressure significantly.
- Backflow preventer: A failed check valve inside the PVB can restrict flow. Turn the test cocks and listen for flow restriction.
- Irrigation pump (well systems): Measure static and dynamic pressure. Pressure below 30 PSI suggests pump wear or tank waterlogging.
- Municipal supply pressure: Confirm city water pressure at an outdoor hose bib before the irrigation supply. If city pressure is low, it's a utility issue, not an irrigation problem.
Low Pressure in One Zone — What to Check
- Zone valve flow path: Debris in the diaphragm seat can partially restrict flow. Flush the valve by removing and cleaning the diaphragm.
- Too many heads on the zone: Count the heads. A 3/4" zone line can typically support 5–6 standard rotors or 8–10 spray heads at 40 PSI supply.
- Crushed or kinked lateral pipe: Look for sunken areas or discoloration in the turf that might indicate a pipe collapse.
- Underground leak on the zone: If pressure builds slowly or drops gradually during the run, a leak is pulling flow.
- Calcified nozzle inlets: Remove several heads and check the inlet screen for mineral buildup — common in Miami's hard water areas.
Why Miami Makes Pressure Issues Worse
Miami-Dade's water supply is hard (high calcium content), and mineral deposits inside nozzle inlets are extremely common in systems that haven't been serviced in 3+ years.
