Why Is My Index Valve Not Changing Zones?
Index valves were the standard in older Miami homes — and when they stick, the whole system waters one zone forever.
An index valve fails to advance because the internal cam or seal is worn, debris is jammed in the housing, or system pressure isn't dropping enough between cycles to trigger advancement. We can rebuild many index valves, but for systems older than 15-20 years we usually recommend converting to electric valves for reliability.

Here's what's usually going on, in priority order
We start at the most common cause and work down — the same way a real irrigation tech diagnoses.
Worn internal cam or selector disc
The mechanical disc that switches zones wears out after thousands of cycles, especially in gritty well-water systems.
Debris or scale in the valve body
Sand, scale, and bits of pipe block the small ports the valve uses to switch.
Insufficient pressure drop between cycles
Index valves advance when pressure drops. If the pump doesn't shut off cleanly between cycles, the valve never moves.
Damaged or worn seal kit
Once seals leak, the valve can't hold the pressure differential it needs to function.
Pump pressure or timing mismatched to valve
If the pump's run time or pressure has been changed, the index valve may no longer cycle correctly.
