    Why Is My Sprinkler Zone Not Turning On?

    When one zone stays dry while others run, the problem is almost always electrical or in the valve itself — not the heads.

    Here's what's usually going on, in priority order

    Failed solenoid on the valve

    The solenoid is the small black cylinder on top of the valve. Heat, age, and South Florida humidity corrode the coil. When it fails, the valve never opens even though the controller sends power.

    Broken or corroded valve wire

    Wires run underground from the controller to each valve. Lawn aerators, tree roots, lightning, and old splices break the circuit. A broken wire is the single most common cause we see in Miami-Dade.

    Diaphragm stuck or clogged inside the valve

    Sandy Miami well water, sediment, and ant debris can plug the small pilot ports in the valve diaphragm. The solenoid clicks but the valve never opens.

    Weak controller output or bad station fuse

    Older Hunter, Rain Bird, and Toro controllers can lose output current on one station after a power surge. We meter the controller output to confirm before changing the valve.

    Closed bleed screw or shut isolation valve

    If anyone recently worked on the system, a bleed screw or zone isolation valve may have been left in the wrong position.

    1. Confirm the controller is actually sending 24 VAC to that station with a meter
    2. Manually trigger the solenoid by quarter-turning it to see if water flows mechanically
    3. Trace and continuity-test the valve wire from controller to valve
    4. Open the valve and inspect the diaphragm, pilot ports, and seat for debris
    5. Pressure-test the zone to rule out a downstream pipe break

    Replace the solenoid only
    Quickest fix when the valve body is good. Takes 10-20 minutes per valve once we confirm the coil is bad.
    Splice or run a new valve wire
    We locate the break, splice with waterproof connectors, or run a new direct-bury wire when the existing line is too corroded.
    Rebuild the valve (diaphragm + seat)
    If the body is intact, rebuilding with a manufacturer kit restores full function for a fraction of a full replacement.
    Replace the full valve
    When the body is cracked, threads are stripped, or the valve is 15+ years old, swapping it out is the lasting fix.

    • Valve body is cracked, leaking from the bonnet, or has stripped fittings
    • Multiple solenoids on the same manifold have failed within a short time
    • System still uses old index-valve hardware and you want zone-by-zone control

    Can a bad sprinkler controller cause one zone to stop working?

    Yes. A blown station fuse or surge-damaged triac inside the controller can cut power to a single zone while the rest keep working. We meter the controller output before replacing any valve hardware so you don't pay for the wrong fix.

    How do I know if my solenoid is bad?

    Touch a 24 VAC source directly to the solenoid leads. If the valve opens, the solenoid is good and the issue is upstream (wire or controller). If it doesn't, the solenoid is bad or the valve diaphragm is stuck.

    Why does my zone turn on manually but not on the schedule?

    Almost always a wire-path or controller-output problem. The valve and solenoid are mechanically fine — power just isn't getting there during the scheduled run.

    Is a non-working zone an emergency?
