    Why Is My Sprinkler Zone Not Shutting Off?

    Here's what's usually going on, in priority order

    Debris under the valve diaphragm

    A single grain of sand, a small pebble, or pipe scale can hold the diaphragm open. Very common after any recent main-line work or after sediment passes through a well system.

    Torn or warped diaphragm

    Rubber diaphragms harden and crack after 5-10 Miami summers. When they tear, the valve loses the pressure differential it needs to close.

    Solenoid plunger stuck open

    The solenoid's small metal plunger can stick from corrosion or mineral buildup, leaving the pilot port open and the valve constantly energized.

    Damaged valve seat

    Years of pressure cycling wear a groove in the seat the diaphragm sits against. Once the seal surface is damaged, the valve can't close fully.

    Wiring short keeping the valve powered

    Less common, but a shorted valve wire underground can keep 24 VAC on the solenoid even when the controller says off.

    2. Manually close the solenoid by hand-tightening it to confirm whether the valve will close electrically
    3. Open the valve and inspect the diaphragm and seat under good light
    4. Flush the valve body to clear sand and scale
    5. Meter the valve wire to rule out a wiring short
