A sprinkler zone that won't shut off is almost always a stuck valve — debris in the diaphragm, a torn seat, or a failed solenoid that won't seal. Until we get there, shut off your main irrigation supply or close the zone isolation valve to stop wasting water.

Here's what's usually going on, in priority order
We start at the most common cause and work down — the same way a real irrigation tech diagnoses.
Debris under the valve diaphragm
A single grain of sand, a small pebble, or pipe scale can hold the diaphragm open. Very common after any recent main-line work or after sediment passes through a well system.
Torn or warped diaphragm
Rubber diaphragms harden and crack after 5-10 Miami summers. When they tear, the valve loses the pressure differential it needs to close.
Solenoid plunger stuck open
The solenoid's small metal plunger can stick from corrosion or mineral buildup, leaving the pilot port open and the valve constantly energized.
Damaged valve seat
Years of pressure cycling wear a groove in the seat the diaphragm sits against. Once the seal surface is damaged, the valve can't close fully.
Wiring short keeping the valve powered
Less common, but a shorted valve wire underground can keep 24 VAC on the solenoid even when the controller says off.

- Stop the bleed: shut the main irrigation supply to stop water loss immediately
- Manually close the solenoid by hand-tightening it to confirm whether the valve will close electrically
- Open the valve and inspect the diaphragm and seat under good light
- Flush the valve body to clear sand and scale
- Meter the valve wire to rule out a wiring short

No. A stuck-open valve runs on water pressure, not power. The valve has to be mechanically opened to clear the debris or replaced.
